Anti-mask restaurant in OC takes ‘Godfather’-inspired message to LA with new billboard

Basilico’s Pasta e Vino in Huntington Beach, which has an anti-mask policy in its dining room, doubled down this week, taking out a billboard in Los Angeles with a nod to “The Godfather.”

“Leave the mask, take the cannoli,” reads the sign, which shows the iconic puppeteer’s hand from movie posters for Francis Ford Coppola’s classic film and the name and city of the restaurant. It’s a replica of a smaller sign that’s posted in the shopping center where the restaurant is located on Brookhurst Street.

The line refers to a scene from the movie in which Clemenza and Rocco whack Paulie. “Leave the gun, take the cannoli,” says Clemenza to Rocco after the deed is done.

Even before the billboard went up near the Beverly Center the Italian restaurant had been a lightning rod for favorable comments and criticism online. A message from ownership posted Saturday, June 27 on social media explained, “So to be clear, if you enter the restaurant for dine in, and want to wear a mask, you must remove it when sitting down. If you are standing around inside and waiting for a table, or waiting inside to pick up food for yourself or as a third party delivery driver, and you are wearing a mask, you will be asked to wait outside.”

When reached for comment, Basilico’s owner Tony Roman did not want to comment for this story, preferring to withhold his statement if it was not going to be published in its entirety.
