Coronavirus: Orange County reports 223 new cases and 2 new deaths as of Sept. 6

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 223 new cases of the coronavirus and two new deaths in Orange County as of Sunday, Sept. 6. According to county figures, the seven-day average of 216 new cases on Aug. 22 signifies a 74% decline from its Aug. 11 high of 851.

According to an analysis in the Southern California News Group state tracker, similar declines in cases, deaths and hospitalizations are occurring statewide.

The number of total cases as of Sunday for Orange County is 49,732, and the death toll is 1,053, since tracking began in the county.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say. The most recent death was on Aug. 31.

Of the 1,053 deaths countywide, 393 were skilled nursing facility residents, 74 were people in assisted living facilities and one was listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

    • 85 and older : 31% (328)
    • 75-84: 22% (224)
    • 65-74: 20% (210)
    • 55-64: 13% (149)
    • 45-54: 9% (92)
    • 35-44: 3% (30)
    • 25-34: 1.3% (15)
    • 18-24: <1% (4)
    • 17 and younger: 0% (1)

An estimated 10,658 new cases of the virus have been reported in the last 30 days.

It is estimated that about 87 percent of the cumulative reported cases, or 43,330 people as of Sunday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

The county reports a total of 696,048 tests have been given since testing began, and at least 5,305 tests were reported in the last 24 hours. Orange County’s test positivity rate – the share of tests that come back positive – is about 5%.

The county reported 253 patients in hospitals with the coronavirus on Sunday. The county report showed there are 77 patients in ICUs as of Sunday.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
