Craig Johnson has resigned as coach of Santa Margarita High’s hockey team, a club Johnson led to three national championships.
Johnson resigned because he could no longer devote the time required to run the Eagles’ program, according to an announcement from Santa Margarita. Johnson, who served as the team’s head coach for 11 seasons, will remain with the program as a consultant.
During Johnson’s tenure, Santa Margarita won USA Hockey national championships in 2013, ’18 and ’19. The Eagles, who play in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League, finished second in the national championships in 2015 and ’17 and third in ’11. He coached Santa Margarita to four state championships and three ADHSHL Division 1 titles.
Assistant coach Ladislav Kohn will run the Santa Margarita team while the school searches for Johnson’s replacement.
Johnson played 10 seasons in the NHL, mostly with the Kings and one season with the Ducks, and was on the U.S. Olympic team in 1994.
The ADHSHL completed its 2019-20 season, with Pacific Ridge of Carlsbad winning the league championship. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, USA Hockey did not have a national tournament.
