LOS ANGELES — This one went the opposite way.

Kings of closing time, the Dodgers were the ones shown the exit this time as the Colorado Rockies scored three times in the ninth inning of a tie game, handing the Dodgers a 5-2 defeat Saturday night.

The loss ended a six-game winning streak and was the first time (in five games) that the Dodgers were tied after seven innings but didn’t pull off the game-winning heroics. Even with the Rockies’ rally Saturday, the Dodgers have outscored their opponents 81-37 in the seventh inning or later this season.

“It sucks. Put in a lot of hard work and then end up losing because of my performance in the ninth is pretty frustrating,” said Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen who gave up the first three of the Rockies’ four hits in the ninth — all slapped to the opposite field. “We’ve won a lot but losing — it sucks. And I hate being a reason for it.”

The disastrous ninth inning began with three consecutive singles off Treinen to break the 2-2 tie.

“I thought getting behind to (Rockies leadoff man Raimel) Tapia, 2-and-0, (was costly), then there was an elevated sinker and he just blocked it. A good piece of hitting,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Then to (Trevor) Story it was a sinker that was elevated. He was able to block it and take it the other way. A good piece of hitting. And then again right there with (Nolan) Arenado, it was a slider that was up, didn’t have the depth so he just slapped it the other way.

“It’s going to happen. He (Treinen) has been good all year. But you have to give those guys credit for staying on the baseball tonight.”

Alex Wood made his second appearance out of the bullpen since returning from a shoulder injury and gave up a two-run double to pinch-hitter Josh Fuentes before getting out of harm’s way. Fuentes punched his hit down the right-field line, another opposite-field success for the Rockies.

“I haven’t had a chance to look at it in depth. I just think those first three hitters that inning did a good job of seeing some pitches up and going the other way,” Treinen said. “(If) I do a better job of executing pitches down in the zone or pitching them in firmer, things probably end up a little differently.

“At the end of the day, they’re good hitters and I should have executed better.”

The heat (101 degrees at game time) seemed to dull both offenses for most of the night. Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin was masterful against all of the Rockies not named Charlie Blackmon.

Blackmon had a solo home run and a double in his two cracks at Gonsolin while the rest of the Rockies lineup went 1 for 19 with eight strikeouts (matching Gonsolin’s career-high).

After his double, Blackmon tagged up and scored when Mookie Betts ran down Kevin Pillar’s fly ball to the wall but dropped it as he was transferring it to his throwing hand. That combination put Blackmon, dragging the rest of the Rockies along with him, up 2-0 until the fifth inning.

“He is a good hitter,” Gonsolin said of Blackmon, a former batting title winner in the mix for another this year with a .347 average. “The fastball command really wasn’t there today — or at least it could be better. I missed a few balls over the plate to him and he made me pay. He put a really good swing on that splitter for the home run. I think I could just make better pitches.”

Mookie Betts and Gavin Lux had the Dodgers’ only hits up to that point and the two combined to produce the Dodgers’ first run. Lux drew a leadoff walk in the fifth. Two ground outs moved him to third base for Betts who drove him in with a single. Betts (now 5 for 8 with a runner on third and two outs this season) scored easily from first base when Corey Seager split the right-center field gap with an RBI double, tying the game.

It would have given the Dodgers a lead but an inning earlier Rockies right fielder Sam Hilliard reached up over the right-field wall right in front of the visitors’ bullpen and robbed Cody Bellinger of a home run.

The Dodgers got a two-out double from Austin Barnes in the seventh and a one-out single by A.J. Pollock in the ninth. But they finished the night 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position (Betts’ RBI single the only success) and neither hit ignited any late-game heroics.

“It was a well-played game, well-pitched game by both sides,” Roberts said. “We got beat. We can look forward to winning a series tomorrow knowing we didn’t beat ourselves and those guys played a clean baseball game.”

The Dodgers have not lost a series this season (the only team in baseball that can say that) and have not lost a series to the Rockies since August 2018.
