LA Galaxy II defender Omar Ontiveros was cut by the team after he was handed a six-game suspension by the United Soccer League for “the use of foul and abusive language” during a game Wednesday against San Diego Loyal SC.
According to the league, Ontiveros used a racial slur toward an African-American SD Loyal player in the 71st minute.
The Galaxy said Saturday that it had “mutually agreed to part ways with defender Omar Ontiveros.”
The league added that “none of the facts in the subsequent investigation of the incident by the USL Championship were disputed by any of the involved parties.”
LA Galaxy II is currently in third place in the Group B standings, so Ontiveros’ suspension could carry over into 2021.
San Diego Loyal released a statement saying it would forfeit the point earned in the 1-1 draw.
“I couldn’t be more proud to be part of this club,” Landon Donovan, the Loyal’s coach and Executive Vice President said, posted on Twitter. “What’s the point of the BLM (Black Lives Matter) jersey and armbands, the kneeling before every game and the commitment to ending racism if we don’t address it when it happens right before our eyes? This is never acceptable and we will not stand for it.”
The Loyal didn’t identify the player that was targeted, but in their statement said their player was sent off for a second yellow card. According to the record book, Elijah Martin received two yellow cards (82 and 89th minute). Also, Ontiveros was given a red card in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
Ontiveros joined Galaxy II for the 2019 season after playing for Rio Grande Valley FC. On a LA Galaxy II team made up of mostly Academy graduates, Ontiveros could be considered the elder statesmen of the group at 25.
