The NBA fined Clippers guard Patrick Beverley $25,000 for “verbal abuse of a game official,” the league announced Monday in a statement from Kiki VanDeWeghe, executive vice president of basketball operations.
The fine stems from an incident with 1:04 left in the Clippers’ 110-101 loss Saturday, when Beverley was assessed two consecutive technical fouls and ejected from Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinal game against the Denver Nuggets.
With 1:08 to play Saturday and the Clippers’ having trimmed Denver’s lead to 107-99, Beverley was defending a driving Jamal Murray near the free-throw line when he was called for a foul. Beverley was demonstrative in his disagreement with the call and begged Clippers coach Doc Rivers to challenge it.
When play resumed, Beverley aggressively guarded Jerami Grant and quickly was called for another foul — his fifth of the game — when he and Grant tumbled to the floor.
After the play, Beverley confronted official James Capers to plead his case, communication that resulted in the two swift technical fouls and his ejection.
After Beverley left the court, Grant missed one of two free throws and Jamal Murray made both technical free throws and the Nuggets’ lead grew to 110-99.
Earlier in the playoffs, the NBA fined Clippers forward Marcus Morris Sr. $35,000 following the first round “for recklessly striking Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Dončić above the shoulders.”
And previously this season, the league fined Beverley $5,000 for violating its anti-flopping rules for the second time. That incident, on Nov. 22, 2019, occurred in the Clippers’ 122-119 victory over the Houston Rockets at Staples Center.
To start the season, the NBA fined Beverley $25,000 for celebrating a season-opening victory over the Lakers at Staples Center by flinging the ball into the stands at the end of the Clippers’ 112-102 victory.
Last season, Beverley was ejected from a game and fined $25,000 after he bounced the ball toward a Mavericks fan sitting courtside in Dallas. Beverley said the fan — who reportedly was banned from attending home games for the rest of the season — directed profane comments at him during the game.
