Galaxy can’t snap out of losing slump, falls to Portland Timbers

CARSON — For a brief moment in the second half, the Galaxy thought it had found the answers to all of the questions the Portland Timbers were asking of them.

Ethan Zubak’s goal in the 55th minute cut the team’s deficit to one and maybe, just maybe, the scene was set for a thrilling Galaxy comeback.

Fast forward to the final act and the Galaxy (4-8-3, 15 points) again ended up on the losing end, falling 6-3 to the Portland Timbers on Wednesday at Dignity Health Sports Park.

“We suffer a lot in the defense but maybe it’s not the moment to analyze right now because we have a game in three days, and then we have another game in three more days,” Galaxy coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto said. “So we need to keep working as much as we can because we don’t have time, but it’s a moment to work, to keep our chin up and try to get the next three points.”

The performance certainly would have drawn loud boos from the paying customers, but maybe that’s the only good thing going for the Galaxy right now – that the fans are still not allowed to attend any home games.

The loss was the fifth in a row for the Galaxy and leaves the club in last place in the Western Conference. The five-game losing streak comes on the heels of a four-game winning streak that had boosted the club to fourth place in the conference.

On Wednesday, the Galaxy started slow and trailed 2-0 before the 25-minute mark as Portland’s Felipe Mora (14th minute) and Jeremy Ebobisse (23rd minute) scored.

Late in the first half, Julian Araujo’s long-range laser cut the score in half heading into halftime, affording the Galaxy a bit of relief.

After Diego Valeri opened the second-half scoring for the Timbers in the 47th minute, Zubak’s goal gave the Galaxy some life, making it 3-2.

Then came an offensive outburst by the Timbers, who took advantage of some listless and careless defending. The Timbers scored three of the final four goals to put the match away 6-3.

“We gave up six goals; it’s never going to cut it out here,” Galaxy captain and defender Daniel Steres said. “I think we put in a good shift, I think guys had good effort, coming back three different times to score goals showed a little bit of our character.

“I mean six goals is never, I’m never happy when you get six goals. Do I think it should have been a six-goals game? No. But that’s on us. I think we can take some lessons from this tonight and move forward.”

The Timbers had four goals on just five shots in the second half. Portland’s six goals came on seven shots on goal.

The Galaxy played without Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, who was with his wife, who gave birth to the couple’s second child a couple of days ago.

The teams split the previous two meetings this season.
