Irvine Unified launches online database of confirmed coronavirus cases among students, staff

Irvine Unified School District has created a public database for reporting confirmed coronavirus cases among its students and staff.

In an announcement posted on its Facebook page on Friday, Oct. 2, the district said the database sprung from a desire to provide “accurate and transparent information” of coronavirus cases while “maintaining privacy and confidentiality.”

Organized by school, the dashboard lists the campus’s total population and number of reported cases, but does not have names of students or staff members or classroom information.

The database is available on Irvine Unified’s website and reports confirmed, “positive cases” at each school within the last 14 days.

As of Friday afternoon, the district reported a total of five cases: two students and three staff members. Only one school, Creekside High School, an alternative school, reported multiple cases with two staff members.

Irvine Unified is the county’s fourth largest district with about 36,000 students, according to 2019-20 figures from Data Quest. It also serves parts of Tustin.

The district began some in-person instruction as of Sept. 24.

The database will be updated “regularly” as positive cases are confirmed, but members of a school community will also be notified “directly by their principals or school staff” of positive cases, the district announcement said.

Irvine Unified believes it is the first district in the county to publish its coronavirus cases, said spokeswoman Annie Brown.

The Orange County Health Care Agency said this week that there has been “minimal” COVID-19 “activity” in county schools and it has declined to release more specific information. The Orange County Department of Education has said it will not collect and release case data at schools.
