With the football season in California pushed back to January 2021 due to the pandemic, some freshmen might draw more attention than usual because they’ve had extra time to prepare for high school competition.
Mater Dei features one of the most intriguing candidates in ninth-grader Aydin Breland.
The 6-foot-5, 315-pound defensive tackle holds five scholarship offers and is among the top players in the Monarchs’ deep and talented class of 2024.
Breland holds offers from Arizona State, Oregon, USC, Colorado and Kansas.
He is practicing with the varsity but still developing like most freshmen.
Breland believes his strengths are speed for his size and strength but he has targeted several areas to focus on.
“I need to work on things like better technique, staying low and trusting myself and not second-guessing myself,” he said.
Yes, with a hunger to improve like that, expect Breland to continue to keep drawing more and more attention.
