NHL draft: Ducks take Jamie Drysdale with sixth pick

The Ducks needed a quarterback for their powerless power play and one dropped right into their hands in the first round of the NHL draft Tuesday. They picked Jamie Drysdale, a dynamic defenseman from the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, with the sixth overall selection.

Drysdale, 18, was the third-ranked player among North American skaters in the NHL’s final scouting report, just ahead of Jake Sanderson of the United States National Team Development Program. But the Ottawa Senators took Sanderson fifth overall, opening the door for the Ducks.

Listed at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, Drysdale is known for his skating and passing skills. He is said by scouts to have good vision and a strong hockey sense. He had nine goals and 38 assists in 49 games last season with Erie. He’s likely to challenge for ice time with the Ducks when the 2020-21 begins Jan. 1.

The Ducks’ power play was ranked 30th among the NHL’s 31 teams with a 14.7% success rate last season.
