High winds, low humidity bring fire danger to Southern California

Santa Ana winds and low humidity are expected to roll into Southern California this week, meteorologists said Monday, bringing with them a moderate fire threat by midweek.

Gusts of up to 60 miles per hour could hit some mountains and valleys in Los Angeles County, with relative humidity in the single digits, National Weather Service meteorologist Kristen Stewart said. Fire warnings for the Los Angeles area will go into effect Wednesday, Dec. 2, through Friday, but that could change, she said.

“It’s going to be a pretty interesting week, to say the least,” Stewart said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Henry Narvaez said the department was keeping an eye on the winds, but will wait until Tuesday to decide whether additional staffing will be needed.

“We’ll see if we need to augment staff, move resources, reallocate some equipment to a certain area expecting vulnerable conditions,” he said, such as mountains and valleys. “We know we’re expecting another wind condition, hopefully, it’s not like it was it was this (past) weekend.”

On Thanksgiving and into last weekend, there was additional staffing to prepare for the increased fire danger, including two strike teams that were placed in two separate areas, Narvaez said.

In Orange County and the Inland Empire, there could be gusts of up to 50 mph in the Santa Ana Mountains and below the Cajon Pass, said Stefanie Sullivan, another Weather Service meteorologist. The fire weather watch for those areas will start on Thursday, Dec. 3, through 10 p.m. on Saturday.

Near the coast in Orange County, wind gusts could get up to about 20 mph, but will get stronger toward the foothills, Sullivan said. Temperatures could cool down a bit starting Thursday, possibly in the mid-60s to the low-70s range for Orange County and the Inland Empire.

Thursday’s forecasted high and low temperatures:

  • Carson: 77, 50
  • Lake Forest: 77, 49
  • Long Beach: 72, 51
  • Los Angeles: 79, 53
