Anaheim man gets 12 years for stabbing ex-girlfriend to death

A 24-year-old Anaheim man who stabbed his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend to death at an Anaheim park was sentenced Friday, Dec. 4, to 12 years in prison.

Miguel Angel Reyes was convicted in October of voluntary manslaughter for the May 16 killing of Jolina Ramirez at Ponderosa Park.

According to prosecutors, Reyes and Ramirez, along with several others, “became involved in an argument” at the park.

Ramirez threw a brick at Reyes, hitting him, prosecutors said. Reyes responded by stabbing Ramirez, prosecutors said.

Earlier this year, a jury convicted Reyes of a misdemeanor vandalism charge for an unrelated incident, but hung on a felony gang enhancement.

While awaiting retrial on the gang enhancement, Reyes in April was released from custody because of an emergency zero-bail order. That statewide order was meant to reduce the spread of the coronavirus in local jail’s by releasing some inmates.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said his office opposed Reyes’ release, along with the overall zero-bail order, which ended in June.

If convicted of the felony gang enhancement, Reyes faces an additional two years and eight months in prison, according to the DA’s Office: eight months for the enhancement, and two years for commiting a crime while out on bail, prosecutors said.
