Anaheim Union High School District shuts down sports activities indefinitely

Anaheim Union High School District has shut down extracurricular activities including athletics indefinitely, effective Monday, Dec. 7.

The district said in an announcement Friday, Dec. 4 that the recent spike in COVID-19 cases is the cause for the shutdown.

The district announced on Twitter: “As COVID cases continue to surge locally, especially within AUHSD zip codes, in order to further protect staff and students, all Athletics and Visual and Performing Arts practices are temporarily on hold until further notice, effective Monday, 12/7, 2020.”

Loara boys basketball coach Ed Prange said the district’s decision was “disappointing but not surprising consider this surge in COVID cases in Orange County lately.”

“It wasn’t easy to tell the kids on our team that we’re shut down indefinitely, especially with us having a senior-driven basketball team,” said Prange, Loara’s coach since 1990. “They’re worried they’re not going to have a season right now.”

The start of the 2020-21 high school sports year was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. The CIF Southern Section, the governing body for high school athletics in much of Southern California, had grouped its sports into two seasons instead of the usual three.

The sports calendar set in July has sports like cross country and volleyball starting their seasons this month, and the first games for football were set for early January. The CIF-SS office stated Monday that the calendar remains in place. Basketball, normally under way by this time of year, has its first games set for March 12.

Prange’s message to Loara’s players Friday was to hang in there and follow the guidelines including the wearing of masks, social distancing and frequent washing of hands.

“I told them we still have a few months to go before the season starts,” he said, “and a lot can happen and there are better days ahead. These are crazy times right now, and it’s not easy being a high school athlete and it’s not easy being a coach.”
