Cal State Fullerton basketball opens with busy week; Tray Maddox is eligible

After a delayed start to its season following a positive test for the coronavirus, the Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball team is set to open with three games in five days this week.

Fullerton will host Bethesda University, an NAIA program based in Anaheim on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Titan Gym. The game will be played without fans and will be broadcast live online.

The Titans then play at San Diego of the West Coast Conference on Friday at 6 p.m. and will close the week at home on Sunday against San Diego Christian, another NAIA team. Sunday’s game is tentatively set to begin at 5 p.m. and also will also be broadcast live online. The Titans also have added a nonconference game against Pacific on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 3 p.m.

The Titans received additional good news on Monday when they learned junior transfer Tray Maddox Jr. is immediately eligible to play for Fullerton.

Maddox, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound guard, spent the first two years of his college career at Oakland (Mich.), where he averaged 9.1 points, 3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 34.5% from 3-point range and playing 28.5 minutes per game in 33 games (31 starts) during the 2019-20 season.

Fullerton was originally scheduled to open its season against San Diego on the day before Thanksgiving, but the four-team Husky Classic in Seattle was canceled because both Fullerton and USD had to pull out following COVID-19-related shutdowns in their programs. Portland State, the fourth team scheduled to participate in the event, was having issues with the Oregon Health Authority.

The Fullerton player who tested positive had to self-isolate for 10 days and the entire program had to quarantine for 14 days, according to NCAA protocols. That kept the Titans off the court until last Friday.

The Titans, who went 11-20 overall and 6-10 in Big West Conference play in 2019-20, are scheduled to begin conference play on Dec. 27 against Cal State Northridge at CSF. The teams will also tangle on Dec. 28, also at CSF. The Titans could still schedule additional nonconference games between now and then.
