Coronavirus: 1,966 new cases and 842 people hospitalized in Orange County in Dec. 5 update

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 1,966 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, Dec. 5., increasing the cumulative total in the county to 84,853 cases.

An estimated 15,521 cases have been recorded in the last 14 days.

The county update reported 1,538,494 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 25,745 tests reported in the last 24 hours.

Fifteen new deaths were reported by the county on Saturday, bringing the total number of reported deaths to 1,618.

Of the cumulative 1,618 deaths reported from the virus, 601 were skilled nursing facility residents, 133 were in assisted living facilities and four were listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 32.95% (528)
  • 75-84: 21.47% (351)
  • 65-74: 19.65% (319)
  • 55-64: 13.88% (227)
  • 45-54: 7.6% (124)
  • 35-44: 2.53% (41)
  • 25-34: 1.33% (23)
  • 18-24: <.25% (4)
  • 17 and younger: 0% (1)

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials say.

It is estimated about 73% of the cumulative reported cases, or 61,716 people as of Saturday, have recovered. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

The county also reported 842 patients in local hospitals with the coronavirus on Saturday – up 96 from Friday. That surpasses the height of hospitalizations during the first surge of the virus in July when there were 722 people in Orange County hospitals on July 14.

There were 193 patients listed in ICUs on Saturday.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
