Dodgers sign Scott Alexander, tender contract offers to 6 arbitration-eligible players

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers reached a one-year contract agreement with left-hander Scott Alexander, avoiding arbitration and eliminating their most likely candidate to be non-tendered at Wednesday’s deadline.

In the wake of the financial challenges created by the pandemic, teams were expected to non-tender more players this year, making them free agents rather than take on the salary increases that usually come with arbitration. But the Dodgers tendered contracts to all of their arbitration-eligible players – shortstop Corey Seager, center fielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger, pitchers Walker Buehler, Julio Urias and Dylan Floro and catcher Austin Barnes.

Alexander, 31, will receive a $1 million salary in 2021 despite the fact that he spent the final month of the 2020 season at the alternate training site and was not on the active roster for any of the postseason. Unlike a salary arrived at through arbitration, Alexander’s salary for 2021 is guaranteed.

Alexander’s 2019 season ended with nerve decompression surgery on his left arm in September. He recovered to appear in 13 games during the 2020 regular season, going 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA. The ground-ball specialist was far more effective against left-handed hitters (1 for 18) than right-handers (8 for 24), splits that became more problematic with the new three-batter minimum rule instituted in 2020.
