The Gerald Desmond Replacement Bridge was already a visual marvel, but it became an even bigger spectacle Monday evening, Dec. 14 — when, for the first time, it lit up in an array of colors.

Nearly 200 energy-efficient LED lights spread across the bridge’s 80 cables and two 515-foot towers illuminated the waters below for the first time since it opened earlier this year.

The lights on the bridge — which connects the city to the Port of Long Beach, as well as San Pedro, via the Vincent Thomas Bridge — is capable of 15 different color combinations.

After a demonstration during a virtual ceremony, port officials set the bridge’s lights to a holiday color pattern.

The bridge celebrated its grand opening in early October, but is still not completely finished. The Mark Bixby Memorial Bicycle-Pedestrian Path is still in the works and, according to port officials, could be delayed further until the demolition of the old Gerald Desmond Bridge.

The new bridge also does not have a name yet. The state legislature is responsible for the naming.
