INGLEWOOD — It had been a few weeks since Justin Herbert was the center of attention for the Chargers’ miserable 2020 season.

A comical final series of mistakes against the Buffalo Bills and an embarrassing shutout defeat to the New England Patriots took away the spotlight from Herbert’s historic rookie season the past two weeks.

Herbert had multiple opportunities to regain the spotlight on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons with a fourth-quarter comeback. Herbert did his part after shaking off a late interception, but it was kicker Michael Badgley who received the attention.

Badgley made the game-winning 43-yard field goal as time expired to give the Chargers a 20-17 win at SoFi Stadium. The Chargers improved to 4-9 and snapped a two-game losing streak.

Chargers defensive backs Jahleel Addae and Michael Davis each recorded a clutch interception in the fourth quarter to set up the comeback victory.

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan had three interceptions with 224 passing yards and one touchdown. Herbert completed 36 of 44 passes for 243 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Herbert added to his season touchdown total when he found wide receiver Tyron Johnson while moving to his right for a 12-yard touchdown pass and tying the game 17-17 with 1:10 left in the third quarter.

Herbert became the fourth rookie quarterback in NFL history to record 25 touchdown passes or more in a season. Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson and Baker Mayfield were the other rookie quarterbacks to reach that mark.

A week after being shut out, the Chargers scored on their opening drive with a lengthy 15-play, 83-yard drive that ate 9:33 off the clock. Herbert finished the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Keenan Allen for a 7-0 lead with 3:57 in the first quarter.

The Falcons quickly responded after wide receiver Russell Gage took the shotgun snap and evaded pressure to connect with fellow wideout Calvin Ridley for a 39-yard touchdown pass to tie the game 7-7 with 21 seconds left in the opening quarter. Gage took a hit from Joey Bosa before releasing the impressive trick-play throw on third-and-1.

The Chargers became the first team since the 2014 Houston Texans to allow two touchdown passes from wide receivers in a season. Bills wide receiver Cole Beasley had one against the Chargers in Week 12.

The Chargers missed two opportunities to score touchdowns inside the red zone during the second quarter. Safety Nasir Adderley had a 76-yard kick return, but the Chargers settled for a 35-yard field goal from Badgley to tie the game 10-10 with 8:13 left in the second quarter.

Similar to their embarrassing final drive in Buffalo, the Chargers ran the ball up the middle on the Falcons’ 8-yard line with no timeouts left and 22 seconds remaining before halftime. That forced the Chargers’ special teams unit to hurry onto the field for a field-goal attempt, but they were called for an illegal shift and entered the locker room with a 17-10 deficit.

Check back soon for updates.
