La Habra City School District returns to distance learning as COVID-19 cases rise

La Habra City School District on Thursday, Dec. 3, returned to distance learning in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

The district of about 5,000 students from kindergarten through eighth grade had been following a hybrid learning plan – some in-person instruction with some online – but will continue with distance learning only through at least Dec. 18, Superintendent Joanne Culverhouse announced this week.

“Although our schools have safety protocols in place, the upward trend in positivity rate due to community spread is a concern,” she wrote in a letter to the school community.

“Based on the information we received today (Dec. 1) from the Orange County Health Care Agency, the city’s positivity rates have continued to increase.”

The district’s COVID-19 dashboard shows 18 “current confirmed” cases among 4,307 students and staff on campuses.

The city of La Habra has a 14-day average of nearly 35 new cases per 100,000 people.

Culverhouse said that during the scheduled winter break – Dec. 21 through Jan. 1 – the district would monitor coronavirus data and remain in consultation with the health care agency.

“If the data trends downward, we anticipate returning to in-person instruction on (Tuesday) January 5,” she wrote.

“Our goal is to have our hybrid students return to in-person instruction as soon as it is safe to do so.”

La Habra’s transition to distance learning arrives in the same week that Anaheim Union High School District decided to remain exclusively online until at least March 12 because of the local rise in coronavirus cases.
