Mission Viejo running back Jacquez Robertson commits to Northern Colorado

Mission Viejo High running back Jacquez Robertson enjoyed the recruiting check-ins each week.

He felt comfortable with the coach with NFL credentials and the offensive scheme.

So just before Thanksgiving, Robertson committed to Northern Colorado, a FCS program hoping to improve under new coach Ed McCaffrey, the former wide receiver for the Denver Broncos among others.

“They loved to call me multiple times a week to check on my family and I,” Robertson said of his recruitment with the Bears. “Also, getting on the phone with Coach McCaffrey himself made me feel really welcomed and excited to play for the program.”

Robertson said Northern Colorado will run a spread offense similar to the one employed by Mission Viejo.

McCaffrey will take the reins in February for a Northern Colorado program that went 2-10 last season and has struggled since transitioning from Division II. The Bears finished 2-9 in 2018 and 3-7 in 2017.

McCaffrey coached two seasons at Valor Christian High in Colorado, compiling a 24-2 record. All four of his sons became football players, including NFL All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey. His son Max is an assistant coach at Northern Colorado.

Last season, Robertson (5-6, 178) led Mission Viejo in rushing with 832 yards and 15 TDs. He posted four 100-yard rushing games, including one against Servite in the CIF Division 1 playoffs.

McCaffrey played on two Super Bowl championship teams with the Broncos and one with the San Francisco 49ers.
