Jo Adell’s diving catch a highlight for Angels before getting blown out late by Padres

ANAHEIM — Fernando Tatis Jr. lashed a ball toward Jo Adell, who the Angels hope can one day join Tatis among the game’s best young players.

For a moment, the Angels’ 21-year-old got the best of the Padres’ star of the same age.

Adell made a spectacular diving catch, robbing Tatis of a likely triple in the fifth inning of a game the Angels lost 11-4 to the Padres on Wednesday night.

The game was tied in the eighth, when Jason Castro put the Padres ahead with a two-run double, the start of an eight-run inning. Castro was playing his first game with the Padres after the Angels traded him to San Diego on Sunday.

The Castro acquisition was one of a flurry of moves the Padres made to load up for a playoff run, while the Angels were unloading to play out the string.

The Angels will have to take small victories where they can get them, and a spectacular catch by Adell, whose defense has been an issue, definitely qualified as one.

Another was a two-run homer from Mike Trout, whose 13th of the year tied him for the major league league with, among others, Tatis.

It was also Trout’s 298th career homer, which put him one away from equaling Tim Salmon for the franchise record and two away from an even 300.

The Angels led 3-2 in the fifth when Adell helped preserve the lead. Tatis poked an opposite field drive down the right field line and Adell covered 70 feet in 4.2 seconds, according to Statcast. He dove on the dirt of the warning track just in front of the pole to make what is easily the best catch of his first month in the big leagues.

“Great play,” Manager Joe Maddon said. “He ran a great route. Low dive … Scraping yourself up on the warning track.”

Adell also quickly fielded a ball in the gap in the eighth to hold Eric Hosmer to a single. After some shaky defensive moments early in his first month in the big leagues, Adell has made noticeable improvement.

“No question, he’s developing into a pretty good looking outfielder,” Maddon said. “There’s a long way to go yet. Don’t be satisfied. But if he could just keep improving how he gets set, his first move, his first step, and how to get his feet set more quickly and unload the ball more quickly, those are the next things we need to get done.”

The Angels have also seen recent improvement from their rotation, which was the primary flaw that dropped them out of the race last month.

Angels starters have now allowed six runs in 30 1/3 innings over the past five games, going one time all the way through the rotation with quality work.

Julio Teheran had easily his best outing of what has been a lost season, giving up only a two-run homer by Jurickson Profar in his five innings.

“This is now the point that I want to be at the beginning of the year,” Teheran said. “Now after five starts, I feel that it’s there. It’s getting better.”

Maddon got 68 pitches out of Teheran and then pulled him when the pitcher complained of an issue with his left quad. Maddon said after the game it turned out to just be a cramp.

Maddon brought in lefty Jose Quijada, and he gave up a run without the Padres getting a hit that left the infield, tying the game 3-3.
